destination swaps to travel more mindfully

In case you haven’t heard, many European cities are going through a bit of over-tourism. In Rome, hundreds of tourists are gathering at the Trevi Fountain at 5:00 AM to get the “perfect shot.” Locals in Barcelona are spraying visitors with water as part of a demonstration against mass tourism. Tension in general is rising between locals and tourists, leading many cities to implement "de-marketing campaigns."

While I don’t have all the answers for solving over-tourism and navigating this space, especially as the founder of a travel company, I feel it’s important to acknowledge this very real concern.

One thing I profoundly believe is that travel is not just about visiting new places. It is not just about checking off a list of places and feeling “satisfied” and “accomplished.” While I am guilty of this in the past, I started Flâner Travels because I believe travel is truly about immersing oneself in the essence of a destination, embracing its culture, connecting with its people, and creating lasting memories along the way.

I want to create experiences for people that balance between authentic local encounters and typical touristic activities. After all, I cannot look anyone in the eye and say, “don’t bother with visiting the Eiffel Tower when you’re in Paris.” But I do think that by encouraging exploration of lesser-known gems and building a connection with the local community, we can try to strike a balance between exploring the world to broaden our perspectives and preserving the beauty and uniqueness of each destination for future generations.

Instead of Norway, visit… FINLAND 🇫🇮

Finland is a fantastic alternative to Norway, offering stunning natural beauty, outdoor adventures, and a rich cultural heritage. If you're chasing landscapes, take a trip up to Lapland in the summer for its vast, unspoiled wilderness, or Koli National Park for its stunning views of Lake Pielinen, rugged hills, and dense forests. For winter activities, head to the gateway to the Arctic, Rovaniemi, where you can find activities like dog sledding, snowmobiling, and visiting Santa Claus Village. If you’re chasing the Northern Lights, Saariselkä, Kilpisjärvi, and Muonio are among the Finnish cities that have you covered with clear skies and the added bonus of beautiful mountain scenery. What I also love is that Finland is highly safe, clean, and has efficient public transportation, making it an ideal spot for solo travelers! Not to mention that Finland consistently ranks first in the World Happiness Report, adding to its appeal.

Instead of Sicily, visit… MALTA 🇲🇹

Malta is genuinely underrated. Though it is slowly gaining popularity, it is often overshadowed by its neighboring Southern Italy region. While Sicily is undoubtedly charming, Malta offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that often goes overlooked. This small island nation has something for everyone, whether you are history buff or a beach lover or an outdoor enthusiast. It has stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and historical sites dating back to the Neolithic period. Malta’s compact size makes it easy to explore, and its structure as an archipelago makes it easy do some island hopping over to Gozo and Comino. Plus, with fewer crowds compared to Sicily and a very efficient ride-share system for getting around, you'll have a more relaxed and intimate experience. Warm climate, friendly locals, and delicious cuisine… do you need anything else?

Instead of Greece, visit… ALBANIA 🇦🇱

Albanian islands offer a less crowded and more authentic experience compared to their Greek counterparts. While Greece is renowned for its stunning islands and historic sites, Albania offers an equally captivating experience with its own unique charm. These islands are famous for their untouched beauty, clean beaches with turquoise waters and wild landscapes. You can soak up the sun in a more tranquil setting while exploring hidden coves and vibrant seaside towns. If you’re looking for an island getaway that is not-so-commercialized and much more affordable than Greece, then head to Albania and discover a less-traveled path in the Mediterranean that promises both relaxation and adventure.

Instead of Croatia, visit… TURKEY 🇹🇷

Turkish coastal cities, like Bodrum, Izmir and Antalya, bring together Eastern and Western cultures and offer authentic local experiences. While both destinations attract tourists, some parts of the Turkish coast may be less crowded than popular spots along the Croatian coast, giving you a more relaxed and intimate experience with a backdrop of dramatic coastal scenery. While I’ve previously mentioned that certain parts of Turkey may not be ideal for certain solo travelers, the slower-paced coastal towns are excellent options for a charming and budget-friendly getaway. These towns have history, culture, and scenic beauty, making them perfect for those looking for a more relaxed and enriching experience.

Traveling mindfully doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty or experience. It means choosing places that align with your values, your energy, and the type of connection you want to create with the world.
